Australian Greek Welfare Society and the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria held a meeting last night, Tuesday 28^th February, at the Greek Community Centre to discuss matters pertaining to Greek migration. The meeting was attended by representatives of Greek Australian organisations, business representatives, individuals as well as newly arrived migrants from Greece.

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) in conjunction with Alphington Grammar* school will be introducing as from 2012 a Student Assistance Program that will provide financial fee assistance for overseas students from Greece who will choose to attend Alphington Grammar.

In a statement released today members of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria's Immigration Committee expressed their satisfaction with respect to their meeting with the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Mr. Chris Bowen that was held at the Minister's office in Canberra on Wednesday 15th June.

Specifically, the Minister discussed with the Committee at length the problems currently faced by Greek citizens who wish to migrate to Australia and the recommendations put forward by the Greek Community. The Minister viewed all recommendations in a positive light and agreed to investigate the matter further.

At a function held at Philhellene Provincial Greek Cuisine on Monday 6th June, the Board of Management of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria thanked the first benefactors of the Greek Community Cultural Centre, in the presence of State Government representatives, representatives of the Greek Consul and the Greek media.

The Official Opening of the Primary Wing at Alphington Grammar was held on May 27^th. This striking building represents a new era in Primary School facilities at Alphington where classrooms have flexible learning areas to best complement Teaching and Learning programmes.

Meeting with the Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship the Hon. Chris Bowen MP in regards to immigration from Greece.

Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Mr. Chris Bowen will meet with representatives of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria (GOCMV) on the issue of Greek citizens migrating to Australia as a result of the economic and financial crisis that Greece is currently facing. In correspondence sent to the GOCMV by the Minister's office, it was noted that the Minister will gladly meet to discuss the matter at length.

PRESS RELEASE

Many friends of poetry had the unique opportunity to experience Dimitris Tsaloumas, the award winning Greek Australian poet recite his works on Sunday afternoon at the Greek Community Centre. The event in honour of the poet was organised by the Greek Australian Cultural League as part of the 2011 Antipodes Festival.

As a result of the economic and financial crisis that Greece is currently facing the offices of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) are being overwhelmed, on a daily basis, with telephone calls and emails from Greek citizens wishing to migrate to Australia.
Furthermore, many individuals and in certain cases families, that have arrived in Melbourne as tourists have personally visited the Community’s offices seeking information and assistance in regard to permanently settling in Australia.

With enrolments exceeding 150 participants, the Greek History and Culture Seminar series continues to attract interest from new students and has proven, in its first weeks, to be an outstanding success.
The Greek History and Culture Seminar series, presented by the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria and La Trobe University has provided a rare opportunity for Greek Australians to learn more of their heritage and in this, the first part of the series, titled “Antiquity, Classical Greece & Hellenistic Period”.
We would like to thank all participants, interested members of the community and in particular the academics for their contribution to the success of the first seminar series.

Ελένης Λιανίδου, την Τρίτη το βράδυ,  με τη συμμετοχή άνω των 150 εκπροσώπων ομογενειακών οργανισμών, μελών και υποστηρικτών της Κοινότητας.

ΑΝΑΚΟΙΝΩΣΗ ΤΥΠΟΥ

Διάβημα διαμαρτυρίας προς το υπουργείο Παιδείας της Ελλάδας, την κυβέρνηση και τα πολιτικά κόμματα, έκανε η Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητα Μελβούρνης και Βικτώριας για την ανάκληση ενός μεγάλου ποσοστού αποσπασμένων εκπαιδευτικών που διδάσκουν Ελληνικά στα παροικιακά και κρατικά σχολεία της Βικτώριας.

ΔΕΛΤΙΟ ΤΥΠΟΥ

Στα Ελληνόπουλα που διακρίθηκαν στο μάθημα των Ελληνικών κατά το περασμένο σχολικό έτος ήταν αφιερωμένο το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της Χριστουγεννιάτικης Γιορτής της Ελληνικής Ορθόδοξης Κοινότητας Μελβούρνης και Βικτώριας, που διοργανώθηκε με επιτυχία, την Τρίτη το βράδυ, στο οίκημα της Κοινότητας, με τη συμμετοχή μεγάλου αριθμού μαθητών, εκπαιδευτικών, γονέων και συμπαροίκων.
