60th Anniversary: Celebrating Michael Ventris and the Decipherment of Linear B

SUNDAY 12 AUGUST – 5:00pm
Greek Community Centre
Level 3, 168 Lonsdale Street Melbourne

Dr. Stavroula Nikoloudis

Synopsis

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Michael Ventris' announcement on the BBC (1st July 1952) that the language underlying the Bronze Age Aegean 'Linear B' script was an early form of Greek. Ventris' decipherment was a major breakthrough, supplementing the archaeological investigations of the time by giving scholars access to the textual information recorded in the Linear B tablets about the socio-political, economic and religious facets of life in the Mycenaean world. This paper traces Ventris' key role in the decipherment of Linear B, alongside the significant work of Alice Kober, Emmett Bennett Jr. and John Chadwick. It also provides a sample of the invaluable information contained in the Linear B texts.

Biography

Dr. Stavroula Nikoloudis is an archaeologist, specialising in the Aegean Bronze Age (ca. 3000-1000 BCE). Her research focuses on Mycenaean society and Mycenaean Greek textual studies (Linear B script). She received her doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin in 2006. She has excavated in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Australia. She is an Honorary Fellow of The University of Melbourne (School of Historical and Philosophical Studies) and a member of the Eastern Boeotia Archaeological Project (EBAP), currently excavating a Late Bronze Age site located between Thebes and Tanagra in central Greece.

Ancient Greek Classes Commence

Secondary students

The Greek Community’s Ancient Greek program for secondary students began last Saturday at the GOCMV Greek Schools Doncaster campus.

The high level of interest amongst the students was apparent from the very first lesson. The students displayed a positive attitude and were keen to actively participate in the “journey” to Ancient Greece. On their journey they will learn the Ancient Greek language and about the Ancient civilization and culture. These understandings will allow them to select Classical Greek when they reach VCE and give them the opportunity to gain up to 15 bonus points added to their ATAR score.

The Greek Community would like to wish the class all the best in it's new journey and hope to see the program grow in 2013.

Adults program

The level of interest in the GOCMV's Ancient Greek for adults program has surpassed all expectations. The number of enrolments has meant that two classes have been formed. The classes consist of adults of all ages with a wide range of knowledge and interest in the areas of Ancient Greek, history and linguistics.

The course, which is an introduction to the Ancient Greek language for beginners is now in its third week and will continue until December. Program coordinator and teacher Mr. Alexandros Giannadakis has expressed how impressed he is by the number of enrolments and the enthusiasm that the students have shown each week.
