Labor promises support for Melbourne's Greek Community

altThe Shadow Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus; the Member for Hotham, Clare O’Neil; and Labor’s candidate for Wills, Peter Khalil; today announced that a Shorten Labor Government will provide almost $600,000 in support for Melbourne’s vibrant Greek community.

Labor values the contribution all multicultural communities make to Australia. Melbourne’s community is particularly special, being home to the largest Greek population outside Greece.
Mr Dreyfus said that a Shorten Labor Government will provide additional funding to support:
• The advanced Greek Language and cultural course run by the Greek Community of Melbourne
• The Melbourne Greek Story exhibition at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture Gallery.
• The publication of two non-fiction works on the history of Melbourne’s Greek community by the Greek Community of Melbourne.
• A feasibility study into three key elements of Greek Melbourne – the Lonsdale Street Festival, the Historic Lonsdale Street Greek Precinct and the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Greek Centre.
“This is a significant announcement for the Greek community in Melbourne,” Mr Dreyfus said.
“The Greek-Australian community is one of the largest communities in Melbourne and this funding will provide substantial assistance to promote Greek-Australian culture in our great city.”
“Greek Australians have given so much to Melbourne, including in the great suburbs of Oakleigh and Clayton that I represent,” Ms O’Neil said.
“This funding recognises the great contribution that Greek-Australians make to our city.”
