The Greek Community of Melbourne in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Association "White Tower" are organizing a special event dedicated to Alexander the Great, on Sunday, November 15, at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture.

Dozens of Greek organisations are getting together to support a fundraising dinner dance for the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, organised by the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM). 

A lecture about his personal journey through Ancient Greek and the Law will be presented by Anthony Alexander from the University of Sydney, next Thursday 8 October, as a part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Sydney.

The Delphi Bank 22nd Greek Film Festival returns for its 22nd year with an outstanding program of contemporary Greek Cinema, featuring outrageous comedies, daring dramas and eye-opening documentaries, and well as a local and international shorts competition.

Flavours of Greece, an event of the Greek Community of Melbourne, celebrates Greek cuisine and the flavours that make it so unique and admired across the globe.

Dr Petros Alexiou from the University of New South Wales, will give a lecture about the Greek-Australian writer Alekos Doukas, this Thursday, 24 September, at the Greek Centre of Contemporary Culture. It is a joint event of the Greek Community of Melbourne and the Democritus Greek Cultural League, as a part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars.

Thomas Doxiadis, a Greek architect and landscape architect of international recognition, will present a lecture on the crisis of landscaping and urbanism in Greece, next Monday 21st of September, at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture. It is a joint event of the Greek Community of Melbourne and the Estia-Hellenic Women’s Cultural Association, as a part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars.

Dr Costas Laoutides, lecturer in International Relations at Deakin University (photo), will give a lecture on the European crisis, Greece and the challenges top and security, on Thursday, 17 September 2015, at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s seminar series of Greek History and Culture.

For the first time, kids cooking classes will run as part of Flavours of Greece. The classes will be hosted by The Travelling Kitchen, who offer a hands-on incursion program run at crèches, kindergartens and primary schools all over Melbourne.

The Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne continue with an interesting lecture pertaining to Greece and its membership to the United Nations Security Council, by Sophocles Kitharidis (photo), an international law adviser to the International Affairs Division of the Thai Ministry of Justice and a Legal Policy Officer for the Victorian Government, on Thursday 10 September 2015, at the Greek Centre of Contemporary Culture.

Celebrated Greek-Australian performer Maria Mercedes takes on the role of a lifetime as legendary Greek-American opera singer Maria Callas.

Dr Ersie Burke, Adjunct Research Associate in the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies at Monash University, will give a lecture on the Greek immigration experience in Venice during the period from 1498 to 1600, next Thursday, 3 September 2015, at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s seminar series of Greek History and Culture.

Cheryl Simpson, adjunct lecturer in the School of Humanities and the Creative Arts at Flinders University, will give a lecture on the symbols and meaning in the embroidery of Epirus, next Thursday, 27 August 2015, at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s seminar series of Greek History and Culture.

Emeritus Professor Robert (Bob) Milns will present a lecture about the Greeks in the service of the Ottoman Empire in the 17th and 18th centuries, next Thursday, 20 August 2015, at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s seminar series.

The Coordinating Committee of Justice for Cyprus (SEKA) is organising a protest rally to the Parliament of Victoria on the Cyprus issue this Sunday, 26 July, at 1.00pm.

“Crisis and resistance in the political art of George Michelakakis” is the topic of a very interesting lecture which will be presented by Dr George Vassilacopoulos, Convener of Philosophy at Latrobe University’s Department of Politics and Philosophy, next Thursday, 30 July 2015, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s seminar series.

Cypriot born research academic and writer Dr Erma Vassiliou, will give a lecture on the language change in Greek from the 12th to the 19th century, next Thursday, 23 July 2015, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s seminar series. It must be noted that the lecture will be in Greek.

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) would like to express its disappointment and dismay at the overtly racist language and sentiment adopted by Australian Olympian Dawn Fraser on the Today Show earlier this morning.

Dr Jane Montgomery Griffiths, Director of the Centre for Theatre and Performance at Monash University and former Convenor of Monash’s Classical Studies Program, will give a lecture on the ancient Greek poet Sappho and her awarded playwright “Sappho…in 9 fragments”, next Thursday, 16 July 2015, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s seminar series.

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) has called for a renewed focus on securing a deal for the Greek people and has called on Australian authorities to take a stance in support of a resolution, following the Greek referendum result overnight.

The Greek Community of Melbourne recently wrote to the Treasurer calling for his intervention in the Greek crisis.

The Greek coffee brewed and the cheese toasties were a hit amongst the gathering of 60 or so passionate people who braved the cold morning to see the live webcast of the referendum result at the Greek Centre from 6am.

On Monday 29 June, Bishop Suriel of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Victoria visited the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture of the Greek Community, on a fact finding mission.

Dr Christopher Matthew, lecturer of Ancient History at the Australian Catholic University in Sydney, will give a lecture on the ancient and modern warriors and their reactions to the traumas of war, next Thursday, 9 July 2015, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s seminar series, now in its fifth year.

The Greek Community of Melbourne and the 3CR radio program “The Greek resistance bulletin” presents the multi-awarded documentary "PALIKARI — Louis Tikas and the Ludlow Massacre". In early 20th century America, Greek migrant and trade union activist Louis Tikas is murdered.

On June 10 the GCM hosted a meeting of representatives of many of Melbourne’s Greek community organisations at the Greek Centre. Unity, solidarity, willingness for cooperation and a common vision for the future, were the common themes that reverberated around the room as community representatives spoke openly about the changing landscape that Melbourne’s Greek community find itself experiencing.

The oldest Greek orthodox church in Victoria, Evangelismos (in Victoria Parade East Melbourne) has welcomed the latest edition to its century old clergy roll call with Archimandrite Fr. Kosmas Damianides, replacing the long serving (37 years) Fr. Minas Dimitropoulos on Sunday 21 June.

“The importance of Cypriot copper from the third to the first millennium BC” is the topic of a very interesting lecture which will be presented by Dr Jennifer Webb, Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University, next Thursday, 2 July 2015, in the Seminar series offered for fifth consecutive year by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Professor Gonda Van Steen from the University of Florida will give a very interesting lecture entitled Venom in Verse: Aristophanes in Modern Greece, on Wednesday 1 July, at the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture. This is a special lecture of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The 2012 Greek History and Culture Seminar Series was officially launched by Ms. Eleni Lianidou, Consul General for Greece in Melbourne and Dr. Christopher Gribbin, University of Melbourne Fellow at the Greek Community Centre on Thursday 1^st March 2012.

Australian Greek Welfare Society and the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria held a meeting last night, Tuesday 28^th February, at the Greek Community Centre to discuss matters pertaining to Greek migration. The meeting was attended by representatives of Greek Australian organisations, business representatives, individuals as well as newly arrived migrants from Greece.

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) in conjunction with Alphington Grammar* school will be introducing as from 2012 a Student Assistance Program that will provide financial fee assistance for overseas students from Greece who will choose to attend Alphington Grammar.

In a statement released today members of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria's Immigration Committee expressed their satisfaction with respect to their meeting with the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Mr. Chris Bowen that was held at the Minister's office in Canberra on Wednesday 15th June.

Specifically, the Minister discussed with the Committee at length the problems currently faced by Greek citizens who wish to migrate to Australia and the recommendations put forward by the Greek Community. The Minister viewed all recommendations in a positive light and agreed to investigate the matter further.

At a function held at Philhellene Provincial Greek Cuisine on Monday 6th June, the Board of Management of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria thanked the first benefactors of the Greek Community Cultural Centre, in the presence of State Government representatives, representatives of the Greek Consul and the Greek media.

The Official Opening of the Primary Wing at Alphington Grammar was held on May 27^th. This striking building represents a new era in Primary School facilities at Alphington where classrooms have flexible learning areas to best complement Teaching and Learning programmes.

Meeting with the Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship the Hon. Chris Bowen MP in regards to immigration from Greece.

Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Mr. Chris Bowen will meet with representatives of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria (GOCMV) on the issue of Greek citizens migrating to Australia as a result of the economic and financial crisis that Greece is currently facing. In correspondence sent to the GOCMV by the Minister's office, it was noted that the Minister will gladly meet to discuss the matter at length.

PRESS RELEASE

Many friends of poetry had the unique opportunity to experience Dimitris Tsaloumas, the award winning Greek Australian poet recite his works on Sunday afternoon at the Greek Community Centre. The event in honour of the poet was organised by the Greek Australian Cultural League as part of the 2011 Antipodes Festival.

As a result of the economic and financial crisis that Greece is currently facing the offices of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) are being overwhelmed, on a daily basis, with telephone calls and emails from Greek citizens wishing to migrate to Australia.
Furthermore, many individuals and in certain cases families, that have arrived in Melbourne as tourists have personally visited the Community’s offices seeking information and assistance in regard to permanently settling in Australia.

With enrolments exceeding 150 participants, the Greek History and Culture Seminar series continues to attract interest from new students and has proven, in its first weeks, to be an outstanding success.
The Greek History and Culture Seminar series, presented by the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria and La Trobe University has provided a rare opportunity for Greek Australians to learn more of their heritage and in this, the first part of the series, titled “Antiquity, Classical Greece & Hellenistic Period”.
We would like to thank all participants, interested members of the community and in particular the academics for their contribution to the success of the first seminar series.
