“Greek communists in America? No way!”

The dominant stereotype of success and entrepreneurism in Greek American history gets challenged in this direct and highly informative documentary that narrates the story of Greek American radicalism from the era of mass migration until McCarthyism in the 1950s.

Based on the research of Columbia University historian Kostis Karpozilos, Greek American Radicals: The Untold Story uses text, letters, song, newspaper clips, photographs, personal testimonies and rare footage of the American labor movement to revive lost moments in radicalism. In particular, the atmosphere of the Great Depression, trade unionism, the volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, and political persecution and deportation during McCarthyism are vividly recaptured.

This documentary shows what it was like for those living on the other side of the American dream.

About the Director:
Kostas Vakkas has worked in Greece, Italy and England on documentaries, TV and commercials. During the 1960s – the boom years of the Greek film industry – he was assistant director for 35 Greek-produced films. He was also a correspondent for Italian films magazines, Tetradio and Film, and a columnist for Anti magazine.
