Description

THE GREEK COMMUNITY IN TRANSITION. INTERGENERATIONAL PERSPECTIVES

Ελληνικοί Παροικιακοί Διαλόγοι

Recent developments in Greece have underscored, once again, the complex and multifaceted presence of Greeks in Australia.

Whether from the 'custodian' site of western civilization or one of the largest and most dynamic migrant communities, Greeks occupy a unique place in contemporary Australia.

In addition to their European demeanour and their Mediterranean, Hellenic and Orthodox lineages, the Greek-Australian (community) has its own unique story to convey.

To accentuate these nuances and interpret them in a way that is relevant to contemporary Greek-Australian reality, La Trobe University's Centre for Dialogue, in association with the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria and La Trobe's Greek Centre, are mounting a series of community dialogues on key topics that concern the future manifestation of Greeks in Australia.

Thematically designed, the Greek Community Dialogues involve the Socratic cycle method, comprised of leading and learned figures in the discourse, relevant stakeholders, and the public at large. The first dialogue deals with the pertinent theme of intergenerational change and how the Greek community might look like in 10, 15, 20 years.

The dialogues offer more than an opportunity to listen to an array of voices across two generations. They come at an important juncture for the Greek community as it moves from the first to its subsequent second and third generations. By probing the issues, the institutions, and the personalities, we seek through this Socratic method of questioning to understand the dynamics, the challenges and the rationale behind the Greek-Australian identity.

ALL WELCOME.

St Michael's is a unique church in the heart of the city. It is not only unique for its relevant, contemporary preaching, but for its unusual architecture.

The church externally is one of Melbourne's landmarks. Internally, everyone is struck by its unusual quiet beauty. The bicentennial windows are a rare expression of visual theology - the largest display of existential-religious stained glass in the Southern Hemisphere.

St Michael's strives to be the best possible model of what the New Faith can be; we want to attract and sustain larger numbers of people who see that this expression of church life is the most meaningful and worthwhile experience for them.

We believe faith, spirituality and a meaning to life are vital ingredients for our health and well-being and that there is a need to get hold of a more authentic religious understanding and to express it more confidently and diversely.
