Synopsis

The University of Melbourne Greek Vase collection is a teaching collection gathered over many years and through many generous donations.  It ranges from the Geometric period of the 8th and 7th centuries BC, through to the birth of narrative in 6th century Athenian vase-painting, the ‘invention’ of red-figure painting in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, and finally the development of a distinctive South Italian style in Magna Graecia in the 4th century BC. Much of our knowledge of how the Greeks viewed their gods and their myths is derived from the iconography of these vases, but they also tell us much about contemporary life and customs.

Bio

Dr. Heather Jackson is currently a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Philosophical and Historical Studies in the University of Melbourne. Until 1991, she was a teacher of Latin, Greek and Classical Studies in various schools in Melbourne, but returned to University in 1992 to pursue archaeological studies. Her research and publications have been mainly concerned with the Hellenistic site of Jebel Khalid on the Euphrates in Syria, founded by the Macedonian Seleucos Nikator ca. 300 BC, but here in Melbourne she has also engaged with the University collection of Greek vases, and was the curator of the exhibition of these in 2016. She is the co-author of a book on the collection and was also invited to publish the Greek and Roman artefacts in the National Gallery of Victoria.

Sponsors

We'd like to thank the following donors: Sklavos and Family in memory of Eleni Sklavos.

During the course of the year considerable expenses are incurred in staging the seminars. In order to mitigate these costs individuals or organisations are invited to donate against a lecture of their choice.

You too can donate for one or more seminars and (optionally) let your name or brand be known as a patron of culture to our members, visitors and followers, as well as the broader artistic and cultural community of Melbourne.
