Ironbound

Greek Australian actor Alex Tsitsopoulos will be in the Australian Premier performance of Pulitzer Prize winner, Martyna Majok’s IRONBOUND.

At a bus stop in a run-down New Jersey town, Darja, a Polish immigrant cleaning lady, is done talking about feelings; it’s time to talk money. Darja with her husband Maks, left Poland in the early 1990’s in the pursuit of ‘The American Dream’ but the Ironbound of New Jersey is not the dream they imagined.

Over the course of 22 years, and three relationships, Darja negotiates for her future with men who can offer her love or security, but never both. Award-winning playwright Martyna Majok’s IRONBOUND is a darkly funny, heartbreaking portrait of a woman for whom love is a luxury—and a liability—as she fights to survive in America.

“What’s most important in this life is this thing you have what no one can take from you. The play does not shy away from the tough questions, all of the characters are dealing with significant challenges, the world they inhabit is described by the playwright as being of world of ”less” and yet the play is infused with incredible humour. We find ourselves laughing at so much recognizable behaviour…..perhaps even our own!.” Suzanne Heywood, director.

“[A] quietly gripping play…Ms. Majok’s perceptive drama, with its bone-dry humor and vivid characters, illustrates how vulnerable people like Darja are hostages to the vagaries of chance, unless they can manage to climb out of poverty.” —The New York Times.

“You seldom see plays that are both harsh and wonderful, but that is the balance that Polish-born playwright Martyna Majok strikes…she writes with such energy and charisma that the play’s four characters feel vivid and real…The play never sugarcoats, yet it steers clear of bleakness because Majok’s language is so entertainingly alive.” —The Washington Post.

Alex played Nikos Kazantzakis in Q44 Theatre's production of NK: A Kazantzakian Montage, which was staged in November last year.

Alex Tsitsopoulos has also secured an exciting role in the Netflix series Tidelands. Described as a supernatural crime drama, Tidelands is the first Australian Original series from Netflix, and will be available to view on Netflix globally.

May 16th – June 3rd at Q44 theatre at SHG.16 Sacred Heart Building, Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers St, Abbotsford, VIC 3067 Australia
