Melbourne’s community television station Channel 31 is set to be closed

alt

Melbourne's not-for-profit community television station Channel 31 is set to be taken off air after more than 25 years of broadcasting. Channel 31 now believes that extension to its license will not be granted and the station will cease to broadcast on June 30, 2020.

The axing follows the 2014 announcement that transmitter licences for community television stations would not be renewed beyond December 31, 2015. A number of extensions have been granted since then, including most recently in 2018, when an extension was granted until the end of June 2020 – that is, this June 30.

It is vital that Community television continues to exist, not only as it is an alternative to mainstream media, but also because it provides an opportunity for many to have access to a medium, that is not normally available to them.
