From award winning and acclaimed Greek Director Tassos Boulmetis (A Touch of Spice, Mythopathy), the heart-warming docudrama 1968 about the epic basketball game
between A.E.K., Athens and Slavia of Prague (Czechoslovakia) will open the 26th Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival on Wednesday 9th October.

Dr Stavroula Nikoloudis, Greek Studies coordinator at La Trobe University, presented a fascinating lecture entitled Greek Folk Songs: The Bridge of Arta, last Thursday, 25 July 2019, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Dr Roslynne Bell, Associate Research Fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne, will present a lecture entitled Alexander in Art: the Legend and his Legacy, on Thursday 1 August 2019, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The 26th Delphi Bank Greek Film Festival returns to Palace Cinemas with an injection of Greek culture, history and stories over ten days from Wednesday 9th October until Sunday 20th October.

The Greek Community of Melbourne continues its very successful Children's School Holiday Program. Children 4-11 years old regardless of skill-level in the Greek Language, are welcome to participate in the Program which runs from 2 July to 10 July.

Late in May and across early June Greek Australian and writers with a variety fo cultural backgrounds gathered at the Greek Centre to take part in the Greek Community of Melbourne‘s “2019 Greek Writers Festival”. From 31 May to 8 June, over 30 sessions including panel discussions, spoken word performances and workshops featuring distinguished writers, exceeded all expectations.

Prominent GCM Board members Theo Markos and Nick Dallas travelled to Adelaide to attend the 13th International Conference on Greek Research which was organised by the Australian Center for Greek Language and Culture "LOGOS" of the University of Flinders.

Dr Themistoklis Papadopoulos will present a very interesting lecture about the multicultural Epirus during the last years of the Ottoman Empire, on Thursday 20 June, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Week Two of Greek Writers Festival commences with a highly entertaining evening program on Friday (7 June), beginning with a raw and informative session about Anarchy in Fitzroy presented by (In)famous poet and anarchist Π.O. The Festival concludes on Saturday 8 June with five informative and entertaining sessions featuring eleven participants.

Associate Professor of Greek History at the University of Queensland David M. Pritchard, will present a lecture about the Archers of Classical Athens , on Thursday 6 June 2019, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

As part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, Harry Constantinou will present a lecture entitled “From the riddle of the Sphinx to the riddles of the psyche - Sophoclean tragedy and psychoanalysis”, on Thursday 11 April, at the Ithacan Philanthropic Society.

On Friday, 17 May the tribute concert “Romosioni & Beyond” will honour Mikis Theodorakis, featuring international vocalist Dimitris Bassis, conductor George Ellis and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

The Vice-President of the Greek Parliament and SYRIZA MP, Mr George Varemenos, visited last Saturday the Greek Centre, where he had a very important meeting focused on the educational issues of the Greek community.

The Greek Community of Melbourne condemns the behavior and the violent actions of a small group of individuals outside the Malvern Tow Hall last Monday and also in our National Day parade at the Shrine of Remembrance, on Sunday.

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) welcomed the announcements of the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Greece, Terence Quick and the Minister for Immigration of Australia David Coleman, about the implementation of the bilateral agreement for the Working Holiday Visa between Australia and Greece. This visa allows young people to visit each country respectively with the right to work. The reciprocal agreement is set to commence on 1 July 2019.

The GCM participates and supports the Greek National Day March. It is not however the organiser of the activities and does not issue invitations for the event.

Leaders of the South Sudanese Federation of Associations met for the first time with members of the Greek Community to discuss how the Greek Community of Melbourne, one of the oldest cultural organisations’ in Australia could assist the present-day South Sudanese community.

During the recent visit of Prime Minister Mr Scott Morrison at the Greek Centre, honouring plaques were presented to businessman Mr Greg Kaias and Mr Jim Sarris, head of Delphi Bank, in appreciation to their financial contribution towards the development of The Kaias Education Level and The Delphi Bank Mezzanine Level.

With three weeks to go, planning for Melbourne’s largest celebration of Greek culture – the Lonsdale St Greek Festival (LSGF) - is well and truly underway.

The Eectoral Committee appointed to conduct the elections for the new Board of Management of the Greek Community of Melbourne announced that the elections were held in accordance with the organisation’s constitution and without irregularities, on 20 January 2019.

The Greek Community of Melbourne recently hosted Dr Konstantinos Pantos, world renowned specialist in fertility medicine. He was awarded by Bill Papastergiadis (President) and Associate Professor Marinis Pirpiris a commendation for his work in furthering the intellectual and trade exchange between Greece and Australia.

After intense lobbying by the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) and the parents of Strathmore Secondary students, the school has decided to reinstate VCE Greek for 2019. The decision was made after a meeting that took place on Monday 11 December at the offices of the School. The meeting was attended by representatives of the GCM, the Victorian Education Department, the Greek Education Consul and concerned parents of Strathmore Secondary school.
