From the Riddle of the Sphinx to the Riddles of the Psyche |
As part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, Harry Constantinou will present a lecture entitled “From the riddle of the Sphinx to the riddles of the psyche - Sophoclean tragedy and psychoanalysis”, on Thursday 11 April, at the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. The enigma of Oedipus , the beauty of Antigone...psychoanalysis owes its’ debt to Sophocles’ enduring genius. Sigmund Freud, the inventor of psychoanalysis forged his ‘Oedipus myth’ from Sophocles’ story. After Freud, Jacques Lacan with his ethics interrogates Antigone for the essence of tragedy. These two practices intersect around the tragic. Two tragic art forms that beckon us to immerse ourselves in their waters. Let us see what wading into these fertile waters will open up for us.
