Melburnians are in for a real treat, ahead of her show at Brunswick Ballroom Thursday 24th of August, Haroula will be hosting a vocal workshop at the Greek Centre.

In this workshop Haroula will cover four styles of Greek singing including:

Istanbul/ Smyrne pre-war style based on vocalists such as Marika Frachescopoulou, Roza Eskenazi, Rita Abatzi and Georgia Mittaki.
USA refugees drawing on vocalists such as Marika Papagika, Kyria Koula, Amalia Vaka and Virgina Margkidou- Athenian style including: Ioana Georgakopoulou, Daisy Stavropoulou, Sotiria Bellou.
Lyrical post-war style study of Stella Haskil, Marika Ninou and Mary Linda.

Haroula’s goal is to bring to light the different styles of the 'ladies' that were existing at the same time, like opening a window through the 78rpm records to the past. This will help us bring these ways of singing to the present and understand better the Greek and Eastern Mediterranean way of singing. It was these ladies that greatly influenced her life and she would like to share her passion and insights with the world.

Bio:
Haroula has graduated in piano performance from the Orfeio Conservatory in Athens. She works as a freelance singer and musician (baglamas, accordion, piano) and plays at festivals throughout Europe through to taverns, cafes, bars, restaurants and major traditional events in Greece as well as having featured on major channels on the Greek Television network. She is part of the new generation of emerging talent from Greece that breathes new life into old songs all the while staying true to the form of rebetika and Smyrneika. Haroula has a strong improvisational disposition, that can take you from melancholy to exaltation in one breath.

Prerequisites:
No prior assumed knowledge of Greek or Greek songs is necessary as the lesson can be conducted in English with transliterated lyrics.
