Event Details

The Greek Centre will host the Pontian Genocide Memorial Seminar on Thursday, 18th May 2023, at 7pm, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Dean Kalimniou, a well-known lawyer, poet, and short story writer within the Greek community, will be the keynote speaker for the evening. He will present a lecture entitled "Kick Arse Women of Pontus: A Homage," paying tribute to the brave and heroic women of Pontus, one of the most intriguing regions of the Greek world.

During his lecture, Kalimniou will shine a light on some of the most remarkable women in Hellenism, many of whom come from an area that has often been on the periphery of the discourse. The unsung heroines of Pontus have made significant contributions to Greek culture and society, and this lecture aims to give them the recognition they deserve.

The event will take place at the Mezzanine Level of The Greek Centre, located at 168 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. This seminar is open to the public, and attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussions with the speaker after the lecture.

Kalimniou has published seven poetry collections in Greek and has translated the works of many local Greek authors into English. He has also translated Papadiamantis' short stories in the critical anthology, "The Boundless Garden: Selected Short Stories." Kalimniou's most recent book, "Simela and the Magic Kemenche," is also his first bilingual children's book.

The Pontian Genocide Memorial Seminar promises to be an evening of education and inspiration, as Kalimniou honors the women of Pontus who have made significant contributions to Greek culture and society. Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn more about these unsung heroines.
