Major professional development program

altThe Education Department of the Greek Community of Melbourne is pleased to announce a major teacher training program to be held at at the Greek Center, 168 Lonsdale Street, from 19 to 29 September 2016.


The program is structured in the following three areas:

Workshops for the teaching of Greek as a second language

The program consists of 6 modules, which will be presented in the form of workshops, and is addressed to all teachers of Greek in Victorian schools.
The workshops will be repeated 3 times each over nine days and will be on the following topics:

1.“Talking up” an appetite-Activities to develop and promote speaking skills
2.To Grammar or Not to Grammar: That is the Question!
3.Words in wonderland - Ideas for teaching vocabulary
4.Differentiated teaching in mixed ability Greek language classrooms
5.Language testing and methods of assessment in the classroom
6.Pronunciation: Overlooked in the language teaching classroom
The program is facilitated by Mr. Panagiotis Andreou, linguist and research associate of the Institute for Modern Greek Studies [Manolis Triantafyllides Foundation].

Participation fee: $ 15 per module or $ 50 for 4-6 modules.

B.Lectures on Classical Greek

The program consists of two lectures on the language of Herodotus and Aristophanes, and is addressed to teachers and students of Classical Greek in Victorian Schools.


C.Lectures on the Greek language.

The program consists of two lectures, addressed to the general public, on the following topics:

1.The history of the Greek language and the history of its speakers
2.Our language and its orthography

Admission to the lectures on the Greek language is free to the public.

The Lectures on Herodotus and Aristophanes as well as those on the Greek language are presented by Mr. Georgios Papanastasiou, Associate Professor of Historical Linguistics at the Aristotle University and Director of the Institute for Modern Greek Studies [Manolis Triantafyllides Foundation].
