Modern Greek Courses for Adults for 2021

Our Courses in 2021

Learn Modern Greek by attending our courses offered in 2021 and planned according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages *

Courses: Modern Greek A1, A2, B1, B2, C levels (Click each level to see the classes offered)

Term 1 (1 February - 1 April) – 9 Sessions x 2 hours - Classes may run on March 8 (Labour Day), if students wish; otherwise, they will arrange replacement classes with their teachers.
Term 2 (19 April - 25 June) – 10 Sessions x 2 hours - Classes may run on June 14 (Queen's Birthday), if students wish; otherwise, they will arrange replacement classes with their teachers.
Term 3 (12 July - 17 September) – 10 Sessions x 2 hours
Term 4 (04 October - 17 December) – 11 Sessions x 2 hours - - Classes may run on November 2 (Melbourne Cup), if students wish; otherwise, they will arrange replacement classes with their teachers.
Venue: Online classes will be delivered via Zoom or Skype - Face to face classes will be held at Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, 168 Lonsdale St., Melbourne (map)

Time: 6:30-8:30 pm (A1, A2, B1 levels) - For C1 levels see below

1. A1 level courses preparing students to be able to:

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have.
  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

There are 4 classes to complete MG-A1 level starting from the entry class MG-A1.1 for absolute beginners and ending with the class MG-A1.4; each class lasts one term (9-11 sessions X 2 hours)

Notes: As regards the MG-A1.1 classes in all 4 terms as well as the classes: MG-A1.2 in terms 2, 3, and 4, MG- A1.3 in terms 3 and 4, and MG-A1.4 in term 4 there are both face to face and online (via Skype or Zoom) learning options.

The classes: MG-A1.2(term1), MG-A1.3(term 2), MG-A1.4(term 4), MG-A1.3(term 1), MG-A1.4(term2) are offered only online via Skype or Zoom.

An additional half an hour speaking/conversation session may be offered prior to or after each class at the cost of $72 per term; students should discuss with their teachers about this option in the first class of the term. A minimum number of 4 students is required.

2. A2 level courses preparing students to be able to:

  • understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

There are 4 classes to complete MG-A2 level starting from the class MG-A2.1 for students with a lower elementary knowledge and ending with the class MG-A2.4; each class lasts one term (9-11 sessions X 2 hours).

The classes: MG-A2.1(term3), MG-A2.2(term 4), and MG-A2.1(term 4) are offered only online via Skype or Zoom.

3. B1 level courses preparing students to be able to:

  • understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
  • produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

There are 8 classes to complete MG-B1 level (lower intermediate level) starting from the class MG-B1.1 and ending with the class MG-B1.8; each class lasts one term (9-11 sessions X 2 hours).

4. B2 level courses preparing students to be able to:

  • understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.
  • interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

There are 7 classes to completeMG-B2 level (lower intermediate level) starting from the class MG-B2.1 and ending with the class MG-B2.7; each class lasts one term (9-11 sessions X 2 hours).

5. C level (C1, C2) courses preparing students to be able to:

  • understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning.
  • express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  • produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

There are 11 classes to complete MG-C1 level (advanced level 1) starting from the class MG-C1.1 and ending with the class MG-C1.11 and 12 classes to complete MG-C2 level (advanced level 2) starting from the class MG-C2.1 and ending with the class MG-C2.12; each class lasts one term (9-11 sessions X 2 hours).

In 2021 we only offer C1 Level classes.

6. Modern Greek Speaking(Conversation) classes for students who want to practise and improve their speaking skills.


In 2021 we may offer Speaking(Conversation) classes-level B1-B2 on Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30pm: these classes cater for students who consider themselves above A2 level or are between levels B1 and B2 ( Common Reference Levels - self-assessment grid (pdf document 347KB)
