GCM Cultural and Educational Tour to Athens Confirmed

Governor of Attiki Welcomes Ongoing Partnership with GCM

The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) is proud to announce the return of its educational and cultural student tour to Athens this September 2025, further cementing the strong ties between Greece and the Greek Australian diaspora.

In a recent meeting between the Governor of Attiki, Mr. Nikos Chardalias, and GCM President Bill Papastergiadis OAM, the Governor reaffirmed his unwavering support for the GCM’s initiatives.

“As long as I’m here as Governor, this relationship with the GCM and its students will continue,” said Mr. Chardalias. “In Greece, the GCM’s great work is well recognized not only by the Greek government but also by the Prefecture of Attiki. We are proud to work with the GCM and must invest in the cultural development of the diaspora’s young adults. I will make time to personally meet with these students upon their arrival. This is Greek hospitality.”

Bill Papastergiadis OAM welcomed the Governor’s ongoing support, highlighting the enduring relationship between the GCM and Greece's leadership.

“Mr. Chardalias has long been a strong advocate for cross-national relations. I first met Nick as a Deputy Minister some years ago, and since then, our bond has continued to grow,” said Mr. Papastergiadis OAM. “Our shared respect and mutual trust ensure we can continue to build long-term programs for young Greek Australians. We cannot overstate the value of these tours — they forge lifelong connections and immerse our youth in the richness of their cultural heritage. It’s a journey they will never forget.”

Mr. Papastergiadis OAM also commended the Governor’s leadership, adding: “I admire Nick for his energy and passion. We are fortunate to have such strong leaders in Greece who are genuinely committed to engaging with the diaspora.”

The September 2025 GCM Student Tour to Athens promises an unforgettable experience, continuing a legacy of education, heritage, and authentic filoxenia that connects the next generation with their ancestral roots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does it cost to participate?
A: Each participant is required to pay a $500 camp contribution fee.

Participants will also need to cover the cost of their own flights. They may choose to fly with the group (details will be provided) or make their own travel arrangements.

Everything else, including all meals, activities, local transfers, and accommodation is fully sponsored by the camp.

We also recommend that each child brings some spending money, as there will be free time for shopping and personal expenses.

Q: Will my child be accompanied?
A: Yes, your child will be accompanied at all times by staff from the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM). These experienced staff members will travel with the group on flights, participate in all activities, and stay at the same accommodation as the students.

Q: Where is the accommodation?
A: We have requested to stay at St Andreas Resort, operated by the Greek Military. This is the same accommodation we used last year, and it was ideal for our group. The resort offers a wide range of facilities for participants to enjoy during their free time. It also provides enhanced safety, being staffed 24/7 and accessible only to authorised personnel.

Q: Can my child still attend if they do not speak Greek?
A: Absolutely! The program is suitable for both Greek and non-Greek speakers. Activities and tours will be conducted in a mix of Greek and English. It's also a great opportunity for students to begin learning and using the Greek language in a practical setting.

Q: Can my child leave early or skip a day to visit family?
A: If your child needs to leave the camp early, this must be pre-arranged with GCM. However, participants are not permitted to skip scheduled activities to visit family. If needed, we can help coordinate a visit from family members at the accommodation, but this must also be organised in advance.
