GCM Condemns Attack on Camp Sovereignty and Australian Values
The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) unequivocally condemns the violent and unprovoked attack on Camp Sovereignty by far-right demonstrators attached to Sunday's 'March for Australia’ rally.
Participants of the 'March for Australia’ rally on Sunday, broke away to lead an attack on the longstanding peaceful protest site.
The attackers physically assaulted and verbally abused people with four people injured including one woman hospitalized by the attack.
Camp Sovereignty is a long-standing revered gathering place and powerful symbol of First Nations sovereignty.
Whilst the GCM supports any Australian’s right to peaceful protest, the “March for Australia” rally was premised on misinformation about Australian migration and seemed a vailed attempt by far-right elements to foster resentment of immigrants and by extension multicultural Australia.
We stand with all Australians who aside from our First Nations brethren, share an immigrant story.
We stand with the generations of migrant families who have helped build Australia, contributing to our cultural, civic and economic development and who have helped build a society where the right to protest is protected.
We do not support the othering of people.
We do not support the spread of misinformation designed to sow fear in Australian society
We condemn all hate speech and acts of violence.
