Oakleigh Grammar School Students Visit the Greek Centre

The Year 9 Oakleigh Grammar School students visited The Greek Centre on Thursday September 15th as a part of their city experience week. The students were met and welcomed by The Greek Centre Director, Jorge Menidis as well as Board Member Dr. Spiridoula Demetriou (Education + Cultural Programs), who both spoke on the role of the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The students were also given insights into the historic Greek Quarter, which makes it home in Lonsdale Street. The rich history of the precinct was explained as being the epicentre of Greek culture in the early 1900s as it provided familiar food and music, Greek language, newspapers, and company for new Greek migrants.

Upon leaving the students were encouraged to view The Greek Centre’s unique architecture which hides the image of “Discobulus” (the discus thrower) in its Lonsdale Street façade.

The students then went to enjoy a nice lunch in the precinct.
