Greece is once again the midst of one of the most terrible disasters in recent years. Over 150 fires were burning on Sunday 8 August 2021 fuelled by one of the worst heatwaves in recent times. Devastating and uncontrollable fires ravaged the whole country seeing people displaced, properties and livestock destroyed and cities, villages and outlying settlements consumed by wildfires.

If you wish to learn Modern Greek on weekdays during business hours (from 9 am to 3 pm) we are offering new classes commencing in the second last week of July 2021( 19-23 July) .

These classes will last 2 hours and will be offered twice a week for 10 weeks on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and Fridays, according to the preference of the participants (specific times and dates will be arranged among the students and the teachers)

Professor Harry Athanassiadis from the University of Ioanina will present a special online lecture entitled How Do (Can) We Remember 1821?, on Monday 28 June, at 7.00pm, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Associate Professor Andrekos Varnava, will give the online lecture Cyprus and 1821: Myths, Realities, Forgetting and Remembering, on Thursday 24 June, 7.00pm, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Socrates D. Petmezas, Professor of Modern Economic and Social History will present an online lecture entitled The communal notables (kodjabashis) and their fiscal and political functions and role in the Christian communities in the Late Ottoman Empire, on Thursday 17 June, at 7.00pm, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Mlebourne.

Professor Michael Herzfeld FROM Harvard University will present the online lecture The 1821 Revolution and Greek Village Life Today, on Thursday 10 June, at 7.00pm, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Mlebourne.

Alexander Billinis from the Clemson University (USA) will present a lecture entitled Hydra and the Flame of the Revolution, on Thursday 3 June, at 7.00pm, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Mlebourne.

Dr Gillian Shepherd from La Trobe University will present a lecture entitled The Tomb of the Diver: Life, Death, and Drinking and in the Ancient Greek World, on Thursday 27 May, at 7.00pm, at the Greek Centre, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Mlebourne.

In a wide ranging discussion spanning sport, history, community and covid, Bill Papastergiadis (President of the Greek Community of Melbourne) spent 1 hour in discussion with Australia’s Health Minister, Mr Hunt. Also joining the conversation by phone was Treasurer of the Greek Community, Professor Pirpiris.

The President of the GCM, Mr Bill Papastergiadis, and Vice-President, Ms Tammy Iliou, met with the Australia’s designate Deputy Ambassador to Greece, Mr David Kilham. Mr Kilham will commence his posting to Athens, Greece in May 2021.

Lansdowne Street was transformed by the Greek Community of Melbourne yesterday, Sunday 28 March, with explosions (quite literally at one point) of colours, music, dance, and drama. The event commemorated the 200th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the feast day of Evagelismos with Hellenes and Philhellenes, flocking to East Melbourne to help celebrate this momentous occasion.

Sunday 28 March, saw over a thousand of people flock to Lansdowne Street in East Melbourne to help the Greek Community of Melbourne commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.

It was with deep sadness that we learnt of the passing of a valued  and long standing member of our organisation, George Zangalis.

Emeritus Professor Paul Cartledge will present an online lecture entitled The Forgotten City of Thebes, on Thursday 8th April 2021, 7.00pm, as a part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Professor Vrasidas Karalis, from the University of Sydney, will present an online lecture entitled “Did the Greek Revolution of 1821 really happen? Myths, counter-myths and historical knowledge’, on Thursday 4 March 2021 (7.00pm), as a part of the 2021 Greek History and Culture Seminars series, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The President of the Greek Community of Melbourne was invited to a roundtable meeting with Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care Greg Hunt and other community leaders around Australia. Also, in the meeting were Acting Chief Medical Officer Professor Michael Kidd and Dr Monique Stone, Head of the TGA, which is tasked with assessing the quality of the vaccines.

Yianni Cartledge will present a two-part series of lectures entitled "Greek War of Independence (1821-1832): Between history and ‘mythistory" as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne and in collaboration with NUGAS. The first part will be presented on Thursday 18 February 2021 at 7.00pm.

This is a notice regarding the 2020 Annual General Meeting of the The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne & Victoria.

In a historic agreement signed by the University, the Greek Community of Melbourne in association with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, the university language program will continue with financial support raised by the Greek community however needs to increase enrolments significantly over the next 3 to 5 years.

With Greece in the grip of second wave of COVID-19, The Hellenic Initiative Australia has launched an online Winter Appeal to support people facing severe hardship over the coming months.

Dozens of Greek community leaders attended an urgent meeting called by the Greek Community of Melbourne to discuss the proposal to terminate Modern Greek Studies language program at La Trobe University.

Greek language students from the Balwyn School Unit of the Greek Community of Melbourne, performed the radio-edition of the tale 'The Young Rooster' by Greek author Glyka Stoiou in a special online meeting.

As part of the anniversary cultural events of October 28th and November 17th, students from our schools prepared poems and short stories, which they recited in an online celebration and were also broadcast on SBS Greek radio.

Every year, the Greek Community of Melbourne together with the other members of the Polytechnic Commemorative Committee honour the anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic students heroic uprising against the junta, with a special event often organised at the Democritus Cultural Centre. This year because of the pandemic such an event will not take place.

On 11 November the GCM became aware of the news regarding La Trobe University’s plans to wind up the Greek Studies program. The GCM immediately wrote to the Vice Chancellor expressing its concerns and seeking an immediate meeting.

Dr. Johnny Karanicolas from the Adelaide University, will present an online lecture on Thursday 26 November, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The program for the Greek Community of Melbourne’s Greek History and Culture Seminar Series for 2021 has just been released. As 2021 coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, it’s probably the most ambitious series attempted so far. More than half the program has been dedicated to 1821 themes. Delivering 30 seminars, and this may even grow, and a crash course aimed at students is a massive undertaking.

David Robertson, Head of Economic and Market Research, of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank will present an online lecture on Thursday 19 November, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Kateřina Králová, Associate Professor of Modern History and Head of the Department of Russian and Eastern European Studies at Charles University, Prague, will give an online lecture entitled "Greek Civil War Refugees in Czechoslovakia”, on Thursday 12 November, as a part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), Bill Papastergiadis, was invited by Prime Minister Scott Morrison to participate in a meeting with the Acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, Alan Tudge, Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs, Jason Wood, and various community leaders, on Friday 23 October.
