GCM Schools Commemorate the Anniversary of 25 March and Heroic Messolonghi

With commemorative events held across all their school campuses, the Greek Community of Melbourne Schools once again marked the anniversary of 25 March with splendour and deep emotion. This year’s celebrations were dedicated to the heroic Messolonghi, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Exodus.

Students and teachers took part in celebrations rich in historical references, featuring parades, theatrical performances, poetry recitations, songs, and traditional dances, highlighting the spirit of self-sacrifice and freedom that defined the besieged heroes of Messolonghi. These events provided a meaningful opportunity for students to connect with historical memory and the enduring values of Hellenism.

The Deputy Principal of the schools, Ms Christina Soumi, stated:
“We are extremely proud of the quality of this year’s events and the participation of our students. This year’s 25 March anniversary offered a special opportunity for our students to gain a deeper understanding of the magnitude of the Greeks’ sacrifice in Messolonghi. Through creative and meaningful activities, students connected with the values of freedom, unity, and love for their homeland.”

The Deputy Education Coordinator for Australia & New Zealand, Ms Maria Triantafyllou, who honoured the celebrations with her presence at the Bentleigh campus, stated:
“This year’s celebration was deeply moving and truly meaningful. Our students, through their dedication, expressiveness, and maturity in their presentations, moved us profoundly and brought to life the meaning of the struggle for freedom. Moments like these fill us with optimism and reaffirm the importance of our educational mission. Warm congratulations to all!”

The Greek Community of Melbourne Schools continue to actively support the promotion of the Greek language and culture, preserving historical memory and the cultural identity of the Greek diaspora. They extend their heartfelt congratulations to students and teachers for the outstanding events and thank parents for their continued support.
