Why the 2026 Census Matters for Greek Australians

Why the 2026 Census Matters for Greek Australians

Declare your Greek ancestry. Declare the languages you speak. Make sure your Greek identity is counted.

On Tuesday 11 August 2026, Australians will take part in the Census.

For Greek Australians, the Census is not just about numbers. It is an opportunity to ensure our community is seen, understood and accurately represented.

The information collected will help shape decisions about services, infrastructure and investment for years to come.

It’s about our community. It’s about our future.

Why being counted matters

Every Census response helps build a picture of Australia and the people who call it home.

Governments, businesses, community organisations and service providers use Census data to make decisions about healthcare, aged care, education, transport, infrastructure and local services.

For Greek Australians, accurate data helps show where our community lives, the languages we speak and how our community is changing across generations.

This matters when services are planned, resources are allocated and decisions are made about the future.

It also gives organisations like the Greek Community of Melbourne important evidence to advocate for our community and its needs.

Make sure your Greek identity is counted

When you complete the Census, pay particular attention to the questions about ancestry and language.

Declare your Greek ancestry.

If you have Greek ancestry, make sure you include Greek when answering the ancestry question.

Declare the languages you speak.

If you speak Greek at home, make sure you record Greek when answering the question about language spoken at home.

These answers help build a more accurate picture of Greek Australia today.

They tell us about the size of our community, where we live, the strength of the Greek language and how our community is changing.

If we want our community to be accurately represented, we need to be accurately counted.

How to complete the Census

The 2026 Census can be completed online, using a paper form or with assistance.

Households will receive information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) about how to participate. You need to complete the Census wherever you are on Census night.

When completing your Census:

  • include everyone who needs to be counted in your household
  • answer all questions accurately
  • record your Greek ancestry
  • record Greek if it is spoken at home
  • ask for help if you need it.

Information and support are available in Greek, and assistance is available in person and over the phone.

Help older members of our community be counted

Not everyone will find completing the Census easy.

Some older Greek Australians may need help accessing the Census, understanding the questions or completing their form.

Check in with your parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Ask them if they understand what they need to do. Help them access information in Greek. Assist them with their form if they need support.

This is particularly important because Census data can help shape the services older Australians rely on.

Aged care providers, for example, use Census data to better understand where cultural communities live, the languages they speak and the support they may need. This can help providers deliver services that better reflect the cultural and linguistic needs of the people they serve.

Helping someone complete their Census helps make sure they are counted too.

Help is available in Greek

The ABS provides information and support to help everyone participate in the Census.

Greek-language information and resources are available online.

You can also speak with someone in Greek through the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) by calling 131 450.

The ABS will also provide in-person information sessions, pop-up Census hubs and assistance for people who need help completing their Census.

Download and share Census resources

Community organisations, churches, clubs, businesses and other groups can also help spread the word.

The ABS has Greek-language information and resources that can be downloaded, printed and shared with the community.

Display a poster. Share information with your members. Help someone find support. Encourage your family and friends to participate.

The more people we reach, the more accurately our community can be represented.
